Offered exclusively by Wilco Aviation

Wilco Aviation is proud to present a truly extraordinary offering to the market – the last surviving example of the Miles M.28 Mercury 6 worldwide, registration G-AHAA.

Currently undergoing full restoration, this rare and historically significant aircraft is situated in Hull – viewings are available strictly by appointment.

A British Aviation Icon

The Miles M.28 Mercury was developed as a training and communications aircraft during the Second World War. A single-engine wooden monoplane with distinctive twin tail and retractable tailwheel undercarriage, it embodied cutting-edge design for its time.

Initially conceived as a replacement for the Whitney Straight and Miles Monarch, the project was put on hold at the outbreak of war. Revived in 1941 as a private venture by Ray Bournon, the Mercury was ahead of its time – featuring retractable landing gear, trailing-edge flaps, and a 500-mile range in the four-seat communications role.

Only six examples were ever built, with the Mercury 6 being the final evolution – taking flight for the first time in early 1946. G-AHAA, formerly OY-ALW, returned to the UK after decades in Danish ownership and is now the focus of a dedicated and detailed restoration project.

Current Status – A Promising Project

Airframe: Complete, dismantled, and extensively documented with photos and detailed sketches. Structurally sound, Aerodux-glued throughout.

Wings & Tail: All surfaces stripped of skins and fittings. Tail components fully restored and covered to first stage using the Poly-Fibre system.

Undercarriage: Brand new hydraulic brake system and axles, replacing the original cable-and-drum setup.

Engine: Blackburn Cirrus Major 3, fully restored in 2020 by Miles McCallum (LAA paperwork included). Accessories such as oil pump and generator require final assembly.

Propeller: Original Fairey-Reed prop, fully refurbished by Brinkley.

Documentation: Includes original logbooks (German and Danish, with some early British records missing), extensive reference material, and the original UK registration G-AHAA. LAA permit to fly included.

An Unrepeatable Opportunity

This is a unique and viable restoration project for the serious enthusiast or collector – a chance to return a truly rare British classic to the skies.
