Description:

Wilco Aviation is pleased to offer this Tecnam P2002 Sierra G-RAYZ, built in 2008 and presented in excellent condition, currently based at a private site in Cambridgeshire, England and available to view by appointment.

This Italian factory-produced aircraft is on a UK LAA Permit to Fly, offering the refinement of a fully manufactured aeroplane without the high costs associated with a Certificate of Airworthiness.

The Tecnam P2002 Sierra is a two-seat, low-wing light aircraft designed and constructed by Italian manufacturer Tecnam. Introduced in the early 2000s, the Sierra quickly became a cornerstone of the company’s range, accounting for up to 70 per cent of Tecnam’s production during some years. Development began in 2002 with the aim of meeting both European very light aircraft regulations and American light sport aircraft rules. By 2005, demand had surged to the point where production reached six aircraft per week, with an order backlog extending months ahead. Over time, Tecnam refined the design further, securing additional certification and ensuring its place as one of the most respected light aircraft of its class.

The design was conceived with training in mind, and many of its key features reflect that role. The Sierra’s all-metal construction, low-mounted wing, and bubble canopy give it strength, efficiency and superb visibility, qualities that have made it popular among both civilian training schools and military organisations worldwide. Its robust structure is rated to +4/-2g, while the wing design incorporates stall strips and upturned tip fairings to provide predictable behaviour throughout the envelope. Flaps are electrically actuated and fully variable between 0° and 37°, with the selected position shown on an instrument panel gauge. Flight controls are conventional, with pushrods and cables operating the ailerons, all-moving horizontal stabiliser and rudder. An electric pitch trim system is controlled from buttons on each control column, while ground manoeuvring is aided by a steerable nosewheel. Hydraulically actuated disc brakes with a locking parking function complete the control system. The aircraft’s two-blade propeller is powered by the Rotax 912 series engine, delivering 100 hp and a smooth, reliable performance.

The Sierra’s cabin is one of its standout features. A wide sliding bubble canopy provides outstanding visibility and can even be opened in flight if desired, with multiple locking mechanisms ensuring safety when closed. Inside, heating is provided by ducted air from the engine, while cooling and ventilation come through adjustable louvers, giving comfort in a variety of conditions. Its straightforward ergonomics, conventional instrument panel, and benign stall characteristics make the Sierra exceptionally well suited for ab initio training. Flight International once noted that the Sierra could “outperform the old Cessna 150 in virtually every flight regime,” a testament to its handling qualities and efficiency.

G-RAYZ, built in 2008, has 495 hours on both airframe and engine, powered by the dependable Rotax 912 ULS which delivers an 800 feet per minute climb. The aircraft is equipped with an Icom 8.33 radio, Trig TT21 transponder, tablet mount and SkyEcho, offering a modern and practical avionics fit. It features electric trim, electric flaps with indicator, dual throttles for P1 and P2, a generous baggage area, cabin heater and fresh air vents, making it comfortable and versatile for both touring and training.

Maintenance has been meticulous with no expense spared. Rotax ignition modules were replaced in 2021, a new Odyssey battery has been installed recently, and the aircraft benefits from factory-fitted hot water jacket carb heaters. A recent service included new Goldfren brake linings, leaving the aircraft well prepared for many hours of flying. The Permit to Fly is valid until 15 June 2026, providing peace of mind for the next owner.

With only one previous owner, G-RAYZ has clearly been cherished and represents an excellent example of the type. The Tecnam Sierra combines Italian design flair, robust construction and forgiving handling, making it a true delight to fly. This aircraft captures all of those qualities, offering the unique advantage of factory-built quality at permit-level operating costs.
